Juan is SVP, Chief Compliance Officer and Deputy General Counsel at Cross River. In this role, he is responsible for all compliance areas in the Company, including bank and third-party provider compliance, fair lending and the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) compliance, and the compliance management system (CMS) support function.
For 25 years, Juan Azel has worked both in-house at financial institutions and at various recognized national law firms managing and overseeing legal and compliance teams and providing advice and support with respect to all U.S. banking laws and regulations, including consumer compliance and financial crime compliance laws. Juan has specific leadership experience and expertise in advising on financial services and banking supporting a broad range of financial products that include banking services, deposit and payments, treasury, indirect lending, unsecured and secured consumer lending, small business and commercial banking and lending, wealth management, investment and brokerage services, neobank models, and fintech partnerships (among others). Possessing deep knowledge and experience with U.S. Federal, State and Global regulatory structures (Fed, OCC, CFPB, FDIC, SEC, FINRA, European regulators, etc.), Juan has demonstrated repeat success in building strong and efficient regulatory compliance programs responsive to changing business strategy, technology, product/service and process innovation, and remediation plans to address both supervisory and internal audit findings and related regulatory expectations. Prior to joining Cross River, he most recently served as Counsel at Hunton Andrews Kurth LLP. Juan has also served in legal and regulatory compliance leadership roles at Standard Chartered Bank and BBVA.
